Tom and I both grew up in Panama in the former Canal Zone. Tom grew up in Gamboa on the banks of the Panama Canal surrounded by jungle, hence the reference to Howler Monkeys. I grew up in Cardenas, also surrounded by jungle, closer to the Pacific opening of the Canal.
We both shared a love for hot sauce and had a passion for growing our own Aji Chombo peppers. After many years of traveling back and forth from Panama to the United States and lugging back countless bottles of Aji Chombo hot sauce, we decided to take a stab at making it ourselves. After much collaboration and taste testing we came up with the right flavor and decided to share it. What started off in the backyard and kitchen turned in to Howler Monkey Sauces, Inc.
Tom and I both currently reside in Jacksonville Beach, Florida with our families. Between juggling day jobs and kids we try to find time to get the word out about our sauce. We have a great presence in Jacksonville and are growing rapidly.
When I say we are growing, I mean it! Our latest addition is Lacey Hagler, our Director of Sales & Marketing. She has experience working for Jacksonville’s professional soccer team, graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of North Florida, and served for five years in the U.S. Coast Guard where she earned 4 medals and 5 ribbons. She loves coming up with new recipes for our sauce, advocates for Special Olympics Florida as a previous coach, and spends her time off travelling to Costa Rica and Indonesia, paddleboarding, diving, and beachin’ it with her dog, Ruca.
